Directions:

You have 20 minutes to plan and write your response. Your response will be judged on the basis of the quality of your writing and on how well your response presents the points in the lecture and their relationship to the reading passage. Typically an effective response will be 150 to 225 words.

Question:

Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific points made in the read passage.

Genetic modification, a process used to change an organism’s genes and hence its characteristics, is now being used to improve trees through genetic modification. It is possible to create trees that produce more fruit, grow faster, or withstand adverse conditions. Planting genetically modified trees on a large scale promises to bring a number of benefits.

First, genetically modified trees are designed to be hardier than nature trees; that is, they are more likely to survive than their unmodified counterparts. In Hawaii, for example, a new pest-resistant species of papaya trees has been developed in response to ring spot virus infections that have repeatedly damaged the native papaya tree population. Planting the genetically modified papayas has largely put an end to the ringspot problem.

Moreover, genetically modified trees promise to bring a number of economic benefits to those who grow them. Genetically modified trees tend to grow faster, give greater yields of food, fruit, or other products and be hardier. This allows tree farmer to get faster and greater returns on their farming investment and save on pesticides as well.

Finally, the use of genetically modified trees can prevent overexploitation of wild trees. Because of the growing demand for firewood and building timber, many forests around the world are being cut down faster than they can be replaced. Introducing genetically modified trees, designed for fast growth and high yield in given geographic conditions, would satisfy the demand for wood in many of those areas and save the endangered native trees, which often include unique or rare species.

The reading claims that planting genetically modified trees extensively has many benefits and provides three reasons for support. However, the professor explains that it is true that the mogified trees have some benefits but have serious flaws as well. She refutes each of the author's reasons. First, the reading suggests that genetically modified trees have the abilty to survive more than the non-genetic modified trees. In contrast, the professor tells us that the modified trees are resistant to a specific kind of condition, and this feature does not give them the ability to survive. She states that non genetic modified trees are more diverse and are able to resist different climate change and insects. If the natural trees get affected by the climate change there are some trees of the same species would survice and ensure the servival of their speices as well because they resist the change. However, the modified trees are uniform and will die completely if new pestise or climate change hit the trees. The professor shows the weakness of the author's first reason. Second, the reading avers that genetic modification technique will give more benefits and revenues to the person who plants the trees. In response, the professor says that legally the farmer should pay for the company if he wants to plant these trees. As a result, he will not earn more than planting the natural trees. Third, the reading posits that this technique will reduce the overuse of natural trees. However, the professor counters this poit by saying that it is, in fact, will cause more damage on natural trees because they grow very aggressivley. The modified trees will grow among the natural trees and will block the important resource os sun and other thing to reach the natural trees. In this way, the natural trees will get crowded by the modified ones. The professor assure that by planting the modified trees will affect negatively the natural trees.
