For many years, it was believed that the adult human brain, once fully developed, was not capable of additional growth or change. However, recent studies have revealed that some parts of the adult brain are capable of regenerating damaged cells as well as growing new cells over time. This ability, called neuroplasticity, enables the brain to respond to the demands of a specific situation or environment. Brain cells adapt when faced with repeated sensory experiences, resulting in the growth of new cells and formation of new or stronger connections between cells. In order for growth and changes to occur, an experience or task must be performed repeatedly over an extended period of time.

Now listen to part of a lecture from a neuroscience class. Neuroscience studying memory recently conducted some research to investigate the effects of long term training on the structure of the brain. In one particular study, the researchers selected a group of adults making sure that everyone was at least in their 20s who were going to train to become taxi drivers in London, which is a huge city known for its confusing streets that are really quite difficult to navigate. The researchers were interested in the effects of the training, specifically they wanted to investigate the impact of this taxi driving training on the hippocampus. The part of the brain responsible for things like long term memory and spatial navigation.
